As cleaning professionals, we have encountered many houses that the problem isn’t being clean, but being organized. Most people don’t know where to begin when it comes to organizing a kitchen or trying to figure out what to do with the piling mail and newspapers. There have been many times where we go into houses and transform them with simple organization tricks. Below are a list my favorite organization tricks.
1. Organizing your Kitchen
- Decluttering Countertops
Are you a house that leaves the toaster, blender, and coffee maker out on counters 100% of the time? Finding a place in a cabinet for these items when they aren’t being used is a simple way to declutter the counters.
- Organizing the spices and vitamin bottles
Turntables are a great item to purchase for your spices and vitamin bottles. When organizing your spices on the turntable you can use the alphabetical approach, but I would recommend organizing them on different levels alphabetically. Buy a 2 tier turntable with the spices you use most frequently on the bottom and the least used spices on top. You can then arrange both tiers alphabetically. You will never worry about a guest opening the wrong cabinet ever again!
2. Mail/Newspaper Organization
- Baskets or containers
Are you a person that dumps their mail and old newspapers in a pile on your desk convincing yourself that you will go through it at a different time? Are your newspapers dated from last summer? Purchase a small basket or container that is designated for these items. Buying a small basket will force you to stay on top of your mail and throw away unnecessary newspapers in a timely manner.
- Dividers
If you would like to breakdown your mail into categories then you should purchase a divider with multiple slots.
Keep these sorted and maintained. Don’t hold on to past mail, set a date and time to go through mail on a weekly basis and purge the items you have no use for.
3. Laundry Organization
- Laundry Hamper in each bedroom
Do you have 1 family hamper that is placed in the laundry room that your family never uses? Consider purchasing a hamper for each room so your children do not create a pile of clothes in their room that sits on the floor for days.
- Laundry Schedule
Do your kids wait until the hamper is overflowing to do their laundry? Create a laundry calendar that gives them 1 day or 2 days a week to do their laundry so they don’t wait until it overflows.
- Waste Basket in each bedroom
Do you look around your kids’ rooms and see trash lying in all nooks and crannys? Purchase a small waste basket for each room.
4. Pet Cleaning Tips
- Vacuum every day
It is important to vacuum your rugs and wash your floors and baseboards when you have pets. I would recommend vacuuming once a day and cleaning your baseboards once a week.
- Store Pet food and treats
Buy tupperware for the food and treats. You can store the tupperware in a cabinet or on a shelf in the garage.
5. Linen Closet Oranization
- Organize the linen closet by shapes and sizes
Have the fold facing out so they are uniformed. Store the linens you use less frequent on the hard to reach shelves and the most used linens at eye level.
